The adult coloring craze skyrocketed a little over two years ago. Is this when you got involved in coloring or have you colored all your life?
Markers, pencils, and pens, there is an ocean of coloring mediums available to colorists today, what are your favorite mediums to use in your coloring work and why?
When I started, I only used colored pencils. My first pack was a 48 pencils, the brand was Maped . I bought them to get the feeling, and learn all the different techniques, I still love them till today .
As time passed I added to my collection more and more mediums. I used stabilo point 88 , Steadler and Kohinoor mondulez watercolor pencils. Sta Markers, touchnew brush markers , pilot gel pens , highlighters, chalk pastels, oil pastels and watercolors.
I watch YouTube videos and get inspired. Than I have to try it myself so I buy the medium and experience it, learning through my mistakes and success. It’s part of the fun, I believe.
Till today my main / favorite medium was colored pencils, but I discovered that combining or mixing the mediums all together can give a priceless effect, each medium adding it’s charm and value to the page
Pencils are my favorites, because of the huge variety of colors they offer, plus it’s easy to control the level of intensity of the color you add and get effects of shading and blending or other techniques, that makes your coloring more interesting and dimensional.
I also love using more than one brand of pencils in each coloring, because each brand has its pluses in my opinion. For example – my favorite pencils so far are Faber Castle Polychromos they are strong and vivid and still I think Prismacolor beats them in color variety
So why not enjoying both and get perfect results if you can . With them I use less pigmented brands ( brands that I buy at cheaper prices), it helps a lot in shading and getting certain effects easier. So for me it’s all about combining.
What are some of your all-time favorite colors that you tend to use the most in your coloring work?
My favorite colors have always been purple and blues, but I use colors according to what I feel at the moment I color, so it’s very diverse. My emotions play a big role in my coloring.
I can still say that the colors I use less are on the red and pink scale. I sometimes use a pallet I find on the net and work with it. Sometimes I just grab the colors as I go.. it’s different in each picture I color. I’m also a big, big fan of black. It’s necessary for adding dimension and realistic touch !
Modern technology is allowing colorist of today more choices. We can either download digital coloring pages and digital books and begin coloring immediately or we can wait for USPS to bring us our next great coloring adventure in a physical book. Which do you like best, physical book or digital?
I have both physical and digital books. Mostly digital PDF files I buy online. Where I live physical books almost don’t exist, besides a few. And Amazon shipping to my country doubles the price for me , so I prefer buying digital files and print them myself. Mostly I use regular printer paper. Lately I started using 160 gr printer paper ( Yuanhao , or jet land) which works better with wet medium. When you buy a PDF , you can always print another copy of the page in case you messed up the coloring somehow.
Who are some of the most memorable artists you have met whose coloring designs you have been drawn to the most.
My first “crush” in the sea of coloring book artists is Kerby Rosanes, I’m a big fan of his art, the imagination and creativity he presents in his art captured me from the first moment. Also Mitzi Sato Wiuff is a favorite artist. Love her gorgeous style so different and amazing. Other artists I admire are Mardel Rubio , Chet Minton , Michelle Tracey Molly Harrison and more more more… I like artists that their art leads me to an imaginary place and let me escape there in my mind.
What is the next coloring book or coloring medium you plan to purchase in the near future?
My next purchase of mediums would probably be Caran d’Ache luminance colored pencils, as I heard good things about them and would love to try them myself. As for books I’d probably buy Kerby Rosanes’ Fantomorphia, I still don’t have it . And new releases from artists I know, love and follow .
The coloring communities on Facebook have allowed colorist from all over the world to come together and share their coloring work, techniques, and general information on coloring mediums, and best of all make new friends. How have the coloring communities impacted your life? What effect have they had on your own personal coloring work?
Oh I’m a member in so many coloring groups . I love the fact you can get to know new people from all over the world, people that share your passion and can understand you when you talk about coloring stuff and issues. I personally got to know so many friends and I’m so blessed to have their support and encouragement.
Some have been inspiration, some I have learned from and some have learned from me. I love sharing my experiences and knowledge. I look at other people’s work and learn so much. And I have a chance to communicate, comment and react. It’s perfect!
If you could visit any setting in the world to color, where would you go and what coloring supplies would you take with you?
I wish I could meet with all my online friends, for real, sit and color together, laugh enjoy and share knowledge. I’d take everything I can carry lol My Polychromos My Prismacolor Markers ,watercolor pencils, pages to color and more … would be fun quality time.
