A Chat with Ivette Ramos Levy

What made you decide to become a coloring book artist?

I started making illustrations after college in 1991 for my mom. She is a writer, so my first commission was with her. In the end I really liked the result and since then I still enjoy it.

How do you create your art? Do you create your drawings by computer or do  you prefer old school pencil and paper?

I use both. I sketch on a piece of paper, then I use my iPad Pro with the pencil.

What is your inspiration for the different types of art that you create for your coloring books?

My inspiration is my family and friends.

Do you ever color your own work? And if so, what’s your favorite medium? Do you like pencils, markers or are you dipping into random reserves around the house for anything that can apply color in an interesting fashion?

Yes, I like to color my own work.

How do you define success and how do you measure it?

I am already successful in life. I have God, my family, friends and a job that is my passion.

Besides yourself, who is your favorite coloring book artist?

Actually I love Maurits Cornelis Escher. He is my hero as Illustrator.

What color or colors do you most love to work with?

I really like working with warm tones, the range of reds always comes back to my color palette.

Outside of creating coloring books, do you have any other hobbies or activities that you love?

Yes, I am an art teacher. I teach seniors and adults. I enjoy teaching them. I learn a lot from the seniors , they are a great example for me.

What are your plans for the next year? Do you have any new coloring book releases planned?

Yes,  right now I am working on a new book that will include a whole year of illustrations that I shared in my Patreon. Also, I have plans with a new character named Mia for this summer .

What are the titles of the last three books you have read or movies you’ve watched?

Since I have dyslexia it is difficult to read for me, but I enjoy listening to Siri read me the Bible . The last film I saw was The Thirteenth Floor. I love science fiction.

If you could be any super hero, who one would you be? Why?

Peter Pan or Tinker Bell. Imagine to live in  a world filled with fairies, mermaids, redskins and pirates.
